Supplementing with melatonin can reduce your body’s own natural melatonin production, leaving you reliant on external doses instead of your brain’s natural rhythm. Over time, this can flatten or disrupt your circadian cycle, making it harder — not easier — to sleep well.

Melatonin also interacts with reproductive and metabolic hormones, raising concerns around fertility, mood, and metabolic balance when taken chronically. And because the body builds tolerance, its effectiveness diminishes with repeated use — leading many people to increase their dosage just to feel the same effect.
